January has a reputation as a gloom and doom month.
Christmas and New Year are in the distant past but our wallets are still
recovering, the days are short and sometimes grey and spring can seem like an
age away.
But worry not for there are plenty of exciting events going
on in Milton Keynes and the University to keep you occupied and help get you
over the post-Christmas slump.
MK Job Show
The University of Bedfordshire is joining some of the region's
most respected International, National, Regional and Local Employers at the MK
Job Show this January.
The Milton Keynes Job
Show will provide direct access to a huge range of vacancies for all our
students whether you are interested in engineering, business, sales &
marketing or further education. We have been invited to speak at the event and
are holding a seminar on Friday 23rd January from 1pm until 1:45
where we will discuss the creative and innovative skills needed in the modern
workplace as well as our involvement within the MK:Smart project and bringing
Big Data to the Milton Keynes community.
Employability is at the heart of the University’s
teaching. Our graduates are highly sought after by employers and our 2015
courses integrate real life work experience through placements, with excellent
teaching!
So do come and visit our stand in Middleton Hall on Friday
23 and Saturday 24 January at the MK Job Show.
MK Data Hub
This January UCMK is bringing Big Data to Milton Keynes. The
hardware is up, the wires have been plugged and the bugs have been fixed and we
are (almost) ready to bring Milton Keynes the benefits of Big Data.
The MK Data Hub is the beating heart of a £16m
collaborative project led by the Open University - MK Smart. The aims of the
project are to secure economic growth throughout Milton Keynes and ensure the
city begins working more efficiently through the use of ICT technology.
The MK Data Hub is giving a number of small and
medium-sized enterprises in the Milton Keynes and surrounding areas the
opportunity to create new products, improve services and harness the expertise
of our academics and the know-how of our students.
Big Data is complex information that can be dynamic,
noisy, structured or un-structured and in a variety of sources, from spread
sheets to social media to mobile devices and sensors to smart-meters and
financial systems. UCMK will guide businesses on using Big Data.
For more information about Big Data or to get involved
with the MK:Data Hub, contact Rajinder Sharma on: Rajinder.sharma@beds.ac.uk
Many of you would have made some form of New Year
resolutions, whether it is to spend more time reading, eating more healthily or
getting into fitness.
If you would like to Get into Sport – UCMK can help! All
our students and staff can benefit from free sporting activities twice a week:
running on a Tuesday and indoor climbing on a Wednesday.
Getting fit may seem like a tall order but the key is
simply doing it – get those trainers on and come along to experience something
new with plenty of health benefits (including increased concentration for those
upcoming exams!).
UCMK running club will meet outside the campus reception
every Tuesday at 6:15-7pm and for climbing meet at Xscape Climbing wall every
Wednesday 6-7pm.
